How to Download Free Sentinel-2 Imagery from Copernicus

Sentinel-2 is one of the best free satellite datasets on Earth: thirteen spectral bands, ten metre resolution in visible and near infrared bands, and a new image of most places every five days. It is genuinely open data from the European Copernicus programme, free for commercial and research use, and it powers everything from crop monitoring to flood mapping. The only obstacle for beginners is the download process, which involves accounts, product levels, and file formats that are rarely explained clearly. This guide fixes that.

Start at the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem, the official portal for Sentinel data, and create a free account. You will need to verify your email before downloading, and you should save your credentials, because you will use them again in QGIS plugins and download tools. The portal offers a browser map where you can draw your area of interest, filter by date and cloud cover, and preview scenes before downloading, which is the easiest route for your first few images. Keep cloud cover below twenty percent for most work, and below ten percent if you plan to calculate vegetation indices.

When you search, you will see two main product levels. Level 1C is top of atmosphere reflectance, which is the raw satellite measurement corrected for geometry but not for atmospheric haze. Level 2A is bottom of atmosphere reflectance, already corrected for atmospheric effects, and it is the better choice for nearly all analysis, including NDVI and land cover classification. Choose Level 2A whenever it is available for your date and area, and be aware that older scenes may only offer Level 1C, in which case you can run atmospheric correction yourself with tools such as Sen2Cor.

Download the full product as a ZIP file, which can be several hundred megabytes to over a gigabyte, so use a stable connection and check the file size before starting. Inside the ZIP you will find a folder of JPEG 2000 band files, each named by band number, plus metadata and preview images. The key bands for most beginners are Band 4 red, Band 3 green, Band 2 blue, and Band 8 near infrared, all at ten metre resolution, while the red edge and shortwave infrared bands sit at twenty metres and the atmospheric bands at sixty metres.

In QGIS, load the individual band files you need rather than the whole product, and build a virtual raster if you want to treat several bands as one image. Create a true colour composite from Bands 4, 3, and 2, and a false colour infrared composite from Bands 8, 4, and 3, where healthy vegetation appears bright red and stands out dramatically. Check the acquisition date in the metadata, note it on any map you produce, and clip the bands to your study area before analysis to keep file sizes manageable and processing fast.

For projects that need many scenes, the browser becomes tedious, and the Copernicus API or a QGIS plugin such as the SentinelHub or Copernicus browser plugin saves enormous time. With an API script you can search by polygon, date range, and cloud threshold, download only the bands you need, and repeat the same search monthly for monitoring work. This is how operational crop monitoring and deforestation alerts work in practice: the same query, run on a schedule, feeding a consistent processing chain.

Sentinel-2 rewards a little patience up front with data that rivals commercial imagery for most purposes. Learn the Level 2A download route, master the four key ten metre bands, and you will have a free, legal, regularly updated satellite source for every QGIS project that follows, from a student assignment to a professional monitoring service.
