QGIS Atlas: How to Generate a Map Series Automatically
⚡ Executive Brief & Key Takeaways
  • Primary Signal: QGIS Atlas: How to Generate a Map Series Automatically
  • Overview: Stop exporting 40 maps by hand. QGIS Atlas turns one print layout into a whole series — one page per feature — with the map, title and scale updating themselves....
  • Verification: Analyzed and compiled by FreeSky GeoData editorial monitoring desk.

If you have ever made the same map for twenty districts, thirty plots, or fifty field sites, you know the pain: open the layout, change the area, change the title, export, repeat. QGIS Atlas exists to end that grind. You build one print layout, point Atlas at a layer, and it generates one page per feature, automatically zooming, retitling and exporting each one.

Atlas treats one layer as the coverage layer: each feature in it becomes one page. For every page, Atlas filters the map to that feature, and you can use special expressions to pull that feature's attributes into labels, titles and file names. A district map series, for example, uses a district layer as coverage, and the page title becomes the district name without you typing it forty times.

The key idea is that the layout stays fixed while the data changes. Your north arrow, legend, scale bar and styling do not move. Only the map extent and the text driven by the current feature update. That consistency is exactly what a professional map series needs, and it is nearly impossible to maintain by hand across dozens of pages.

When the preview looks right, export the whole series in one run rather than page by page. In the Atlas export dialog you can build output file names from feature attributes, so a district series comes out as neatly named files instead of page-001 through page-050. Exporting to a single multi-page PDF keeps the series together for sharing, while separate image files suit printing or uploading to a web gallery.

Before you share the series, spot-check the exported files, not just the on-screen preview. Fonts, label placement and image resolution can shift between preview and export, especially with large raster backgrounds. Check the first, last and one middle page at full size, and confirm the file names match the features they show, because a misnamed map in a published series is an error that travels far.
