Drone mapping fails are usually flight-setting fails. Get overlap, altitude, and speed right, and photogrammetry software does the rest; get them wrong, and no software can rescue the gaps.

Overlap is the percentage of each photo shared with the next one. Front overlap should be at least 75 percent, and side overlap at least 60 percent. With low overlap, features appear in too few photos, and you get holes, warped areas, or a failed reconstruction.

Altitude controls ground resolution, measured as ground sample distance, or GSD. Fly lower and each pixel covers less ground, so detail improves; fly higher and you cover more area per flight but lose detail. Decide your required GSD from the job.

Speed interacts with shutter speed to control motion blur. A fast drone with a slow shutter smears each photo, and blurred photos match poorly. Slower is safer, and on a windy day you should slow down further.

For a flat map, a single grid with the camera pointing straight down is standard. For 3D models, add an oblique pass with the camera tilted, which captures vertical faces the nadir pass misses.

Before takeoff, run a short checklist: batteries charged, memory card empty, GPS lock acquired, camera settings checked, and weather noted. Drone mapping rewards boring consistency.
